Extern Program

This program offers the opportunity for a 4th-year undergraduate student to receive academic credit while working in an architectural practice. The program specifies that a student works full time in an architecture firm or office related to the architecture profession located in a place other than their hometown for the entire semester. Students will be paid by the architectural firm while employed during the semester of participation in the extern program.

Daily activities of the office meet the requirements for typical design studio, ARCH 4015. Other course requirements can be fulfilled by using the firm as a direct reference for writings about everyday practices.

Other coursework may be arranged with permission of the 4+ program chair up to a maximum of 15 credit hours. Generally this option is only offered in the fall semester. It is not possible to work during the summer and receive academic credit.

At the end of the semester each student participating in the extern program will be asked to submit a self-assessment via electronic file and a work portfolio [pdf] electronic file to Heinrich Schnoedt at email address schnoedt@vt.edu.

A letter of evaluation must be sent by the employer on company letterhead directly to Heinrich Schnoedt. The letters should be sent via electronic file to schnoedt@vt.edu. Employers who prefer to send the letter via U.S. mail service should send to the attention of Heinrich Schnoedt, 201 Cowgill Hall, Blacksburg, Virginia 24061.
