Secretary of Commerce Pat Gottschalk visited the Solar Decathlon Team at the Research and Demonstration Facility of the School of Architecture + Design. He was most impressed with the Solar House. Commenting about the potential for Virginia to harvest the manufacturing of products emanating from research projects like the solar house, he remarked how such collaborative efforts between industry and academia can have a positive impact on the state economy over the next decade. As a research to practice project, the work is particularly effective in delivering innovative teaching, research and engagement opportunities that expand the range of the university to link to industry within the state.

Pictured with Secretary Gottschalk are the student solar team; Joseph Wheeler, Robert Dunay, Robert Schubert and Andrew McCoy, primary faculty advisors; Ted Settle, Office of Economic Development, Virginia Tech, and two professional consultants - Chris Roberts, Baseline Solar, Blacksburg, VA and Matthew Dunay, Altenergy, Charlottesville, VA.
