Hunter Pittman is currently an associate professor in the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech. He has served as chair of its Professional Program in Architecture. He teaches Architecture III design laboratory, Building Assemblies and Building Analysis in the third year of the B.Arch program and also advises fifth year thesis students. Prior to becoming the Chair of the Professional Program in Architecture, Mr. Pittman taught basic design and environmental building systems in the Graduate Program, as well as advising graduate thesis students. In 1999 he was awarded the University Certificate for Teaching Excellence.
Since 2002, he has in collaboration with Professor Steve Thompson, conducted a design/build studio involving third year architecture students. This project has focused on pedagogical research into the nature of studio teaching as well as design and material research on rammed earth construction and studies of wood framing techniques based on a study of the Schindler frame. Mr. Pittman maintains a small architecture practice in Blacksburg and previously practiced in southeastern Virginia and in Charlotte, North Carolina, prior to joining the faculty. He is a registered architect in Virginia.
