Laurie Olin — educator, landscape architect, and designer — will deliver the second Robert L. Turner Lecture, “It Always Begins With Ordinary Things… ” at Virginia Tech’s School of Architecture+Design on Wednesday, September 30 at 7 pm in Hancock Hall.

Olin’s signature projects explore the artful creation and transformation of the public realm across a range of scales including ecological and regional systems, urban districts, museums, campuses, civic parks, plazas, and intimate gardens. Notable projects include Columbus Circle in New York City; Independence National Historical Park, the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and Logan Square in Philadelphia; the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles; and the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden and the post-9/11 redesign of the Washington Monument grounds in Washington, D.C. His many collaborative works include the 2010 competition for the U.S. Embassy in London with KieranTimberlake and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin with Peter Eisenman. Olin and Weiss/Manfredi’s competition winning design for the Sylvan Theater at the Washington Monument Grounds was awarded the 2015 Chicago Athenaeum International Architecture Award.

Laurie Olin is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, and an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 1998 Laurie Olin was the recipient of the Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and in 2013 he was awarded the National Medal of Arts, our nation’s highest award in the arts, by President Obama.

In addition to his notable practice, Laurie Olin has held faculty positions at the University of Washington and the University of Pennsylvania, and chaired the landscape architecture program at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design. Today, he serves as Practice Professor of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania.
